Karima

Kathy Carmel aka Karima which means generous, is from Los Gatos. She has been a dancer from the age of five. Her mother was an actress and tap dancer until she married her father a Stanford/Harvard trained M.D. A little under five feet tall, she eventually gave up ballet, jazz, ballroom and ice skating for something more suitable to her curvy figure after she realized she was not built to do the splits no matter how hard she tried while even teaching aerobics classes. So at the age of 25 she saw Sabiba dancing at an outdoor gig at a festival at a park in Atherton and everyone said she would be a natural since she was already doing back bends and stomach rolls and hip movements to rival the best belly dancers. After less than a year with Sabiba, they were doing festivals together.

As a Life Insurance agent and mortgage broker, Kathy could not be a full time dancer, and so could not make it a career. She took lessons and workshops from various other teachers off and on and is happy to finally find time to be in this great troupe. She has traveled around the world and lived in Alaska many summers and lived in Europe and taught belly dance and aerobics there in Southern Bavaria from 1989 to 1992. Kathy is single again after a 20 year marriage to a baseball coach teacher (who also coached in Alaska ) and then a 3 year marriage to an engineer from Lockheed sent to Germany. She attended high school for one year in Switzerland but graduated from Notre Dame Belmont, and then Santa Clara University. She has one son, Jason, who is an environmentalist up in Willits with his wife, an M.D. and the fraternal twin boys.
